Cyclone JAWAD: Met issues Red Warning for heavy to very heavy rainfall in 4 districts of Odisha

Bhubaneswar: The regional Meteorological Centre here has issued a Red Warning for heavy to very heavy rainfall in four districts of Odisha.

The weather department in its latest bulletin said that the Cyclonic Storm ‘JAWAD’ over west-central Bay of Bengal moved north-northwestwards with a speed of 22 kmph during past 6 hours and lay centered at 1430 hrs IST of today over west-central of Bengal near Lat. 15.0°N and Long. 85.3°E, about 360 km south-southeast of Vishakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh), 470 km south-southeast of Gopalpur (Odisha), 530 km south-southwest of Puri (Odisha) and 600 km south-southwest of Paradip (Odisha).

The Cyclonic Storm ‘JAWAD’ is likely to move north-northwestwards, intensify further and reach west-central Bay of Bengal off north Andhra Pradesh – south Odisha coasts by tomorrow, the 4th December morning. Thereafter it is likely to re-curve north-northeastwards and move along Odisha coast reaching near Puri around 5th December noon. Subsequently, it is likely to continue to move north-northeastwards along coastal Odisha towards West Bengal coast.

Under the influence of the Cyclonic Storm ‘JAWAD,’ heavy to very heavy rainfall very likely to occur at a few places with isolated extremely heavy falls (more than 20 cm) over the districts of Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, and Jagatsinghpur between 8.30 AM of December 4 and 8.30 AM of December 5.

While issuing Orange Warning for Kendrapada, Cuttack, Khurda, Nayagarh, Kandhamal, and Rayagada districts the weatherman said that heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely to occur at one or two places over these districts.

Likewise, Yellow Warning for heavy rainfall also has been sounded for Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Koraput and Malkangiri districts of the State.

Director General of India Meteorological Department (IMD), Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said that Cyclonic Storm ‘JAWAD is likely to reach the west-central Bay of Bengal off the Andhra Pradesh-Odisha coast by the evening of December 4. It may touch the land near Puri in Odisha by noon of December 5, added IMD DG. It will continue to move north-northeastward along the Odisha coast towards the West Bengal coast.
