Cyclone in Odisha: Leave of Government employees canceled in 5 districts

In view of the probable cyclone in Odisha, the state government has decided to cancel all the government employees' leaves.

Bhubaneswar: In view of the probable cyclone in Odisha, the state government has decided to cancel all the government employees’ leaves.

The week-off of all the government employees has been canceled.  The officials are directed not to leave the headquarters. Those who are on leave have been asked to cancel their leave and join the duty as early as possible said a notice in this regard.

It is worth mentioning here that the leaves have been canceled from December 3 to December 6. The districts included in the list are Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati and Ganjam.

The depression over Southwest Bay of Bengal moved west-northwestwards with a speed of 18
kmph during past 06 hours, intensified into a deep depression and lay centered at 0530 hours IST of today, the 2nd December, 2023 over the same region near Latitude 10.5°N and Longitude 84.1°E, about 500 km east-southeast of Puducherry, 510 km east-southeast of Chennai, 630 km southeast of Nellore,  710 km south-southeast of Bapatla and 710 km south-southeast of Machilipatnam.

It is likely to move west-northwestwards, intensify into a Cyclonic Storm over Southwest Bay of
Bengal during next 24 hours. Thereafter, it would move northwestwards and reach westcentral Bay of Bengal off south Andhra Pradesh and adjoining north Tamilnadu coasts by 4th December forenoon.

Thereafter, it would move nearly northwards almost parallel and close to south Andhra Pradesh coasts and cross South Andhra Pradesh coasts between Nellore and Machilipatnam during forenoon of 5th December as a Cyclonic Storm with a maximum sustained wind speed of 80-90 kmph gusting to 100 kmph.

The Department of Agriculture and Farmers’ Empowerment Government of Odisha has warned farmers about a cyclone in Odisha. The Secretary of Department of Agriculture and Farmers’ Empowerment Government of Odisha Arabinda Kumar Padhee has urged the farmers to protect the crops that have bene harvested recently by them.

The crops that have been harvested need to be protected and be kept covered in a place where it will not be affected by the flow of water or rains. But he further clarified that there is nothing to be worried about.

Further it is worth mentioning that the collectors of five districts have been said to be on high alert due to the impending probable cyclone in Odisha by the Special Relief Commissioner (SRC), said reliable reports. As a preventive measure, fishermen have been instructed to refrain from venturing into deep sea.

RAIN IS LIKELY IN ODISHA IN THE FOLLOWING PLACES: 

On December 3: 

Light to moderate rain/ thundershower very likely to occur at a few places over the districts Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapti, Ganjam at one or two places over the rest districts of coastal Odisha, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Boudh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj.

On December 4:

Light to moderate rain/ thundershower very likely to occur at many places over the districts of Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapti, Ganjam, Kandhamal, Puri, at a few places over the rest districts of coastal Odisha, Nawarangpur, Kalahandi, Boudh, and at one or two places over the rest districts of Odisha.

Yellow Warning- Heavy rainfall (7 to 11cm) very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, and Ganjam.

On December 5: 

Light to moderate rain/ thundershower very likely to occur at most places over the districts of South coastal Odisha, Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur and at many places over the rest districts of south interior Odisha, north coastal Odisha and at a few places over the districts of north interior Odisha.

Orange warning– Heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20cm) very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, and Ganjam.

Yellow Warning-  Heavy rainfall (7 to 11cm) very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nayagarh, Khordha, and Puri.

Impact and suggested action(for the districts under warning):

1. Some damage to standing crops and vegetables are likely.
2. Temporarily water logging and some damages of Kutcha Road and wall collapsed of kutcha houses likely.
3. Harvesting of matured paddy, Ragi, Millets and other crops, horticultural crops and vegetables may be completed by December 3 and harvested crop may be kept in safe place.
4. Staying in vulnerable kutcha houses may be avoided.
