Cyclone Asani: Fishermen advised to stay off sea till May 12, Strict Action To Be Taken

Bhubaneswar: All the fishermen have been advised not to venture into the deep sea area over the west-central Bay of Bengal and Northwest Bay of Bengal till May 12, 2022, in view of the severe cyclone Asani.

Reportedly, several incidents of boat mishaps have been coming into light in the last few days due to which the fishermen are risking their lives in the deep sea.

The Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) of Odisha Pradeep Jena took to his official Twitter handle on Tuesday and wrote “Some information being received that in spite of warning some fishermen are venturing into the sea. Dist Administration advised to do public miking in the areas & advise fishermen not to venture into sea till 12th May.”

He also added that if someone does not listen and disobey, strict action will be taken against them under Disaster Management Act, 2005.

The decision has been taken after boats capsized in the rough sea at Aryapalli near Chhatrapur of Ganjam today. However, more than 50 fishermen were rescued safely. The fishermen from Sanaryapalli, Bada Aryapalli, and Golabandha areas were returning to the coast in their six fishing vessels.

Notably, the fishermen have justified that they had gone into the sea for fishing before the warnings were issued.

In a similar incident, another boat capsized in Chilika on May 5. Out of 12 persons in the boat, 11 persons were rescued safely. Unfortunately, one person lost his life.
