Bird census at Hirakud Reservoir begins today

The annual bird census at Hirakud Reservoir in Sambalpur district of Odisha had begun from today. The census will continue till 5 pm.

Sambalpur: The annual bird census at Hirakud Reservoir in Sambalpur district of Odisha had begun from today. The census will be carried out by the Hirakud Wildlife Division in the area of the reservoir adjoining Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, and Chhattisgarh.

The annual bird census at the Hirakud Reservoir started at 6 am today, and will continue till 5 pm.

Reliable reports state that a total of 21 sectors have been formed for the same. 32 teams comprising of 78 people, including 33 ornithologists will be engaged in carrying out the census.

Members of the teams have been provided with binoculars and life jackets. A total of 32 fishing boats from Sambalpur, Bargah, and Jharsuguda will also be used for the census, confirmed reliable reports.

Fishermen experienced in bird counting will be assisting the team experts. Notably, the census of last year saw a total of 3,16,000 birds across 108 species in the Hirakud Wildlife Division.
