Bhubaneswar: Baby trapped in the abandoned borewell at Laripali village under the limits of Rengali Police station of Sambalpur district is not an accident, but is an act of crime, stated Director General of Odisha Fire Services, Sudhansu Sarangi.

While briefing media about the entire incident today, said “The rescue of the newborn yesterday was very challenging. After we got the news of the incident, the fire team immediately reached the spot. The newborn was 13 feet below the borewell. The pipe was 20 feet. So our team gave oxygen to the baby first.”

“We used 3 JCB machines to hollow out 4 feet from all four sides of the pipe. Then we needed a victim location camera to know the exact location of the child. The camera was in Bhubaneswar. However, the Chief Minister, who himself was reviewing the incident, directed to take the camera from Bhubaneswar to the spot in a special aircraft,” he added.

“During the rescue operation, the newborn’s cries kept us informed that the baby was fine. Around 15 feet of pipe we cut with a saw and installed the plate. Then after slowly removing the plate, some of the debris inside the tube and the baby both came out,” Fire Services DG further said.

“The fireman who were at the spot rescued the child and handed it over to the doctor. The baby was admitted at the SNCU (Special Newborn Care Unit) of VIMSAR in Burla. Now the condition of the child is fine. However, it is not an accident, it is a crime. The local police has registered a case and is investigating it. Those who are guilty in this incident should be punished,” he demanded.
