Assam CM dials Naveen, objects Bezbaroa’s house demolition

Bezbaroa residenceBhubaneswar/Sambalpur: Odisha Government’s effort to raze the heritage residence of Assamese literature doyen Lakshminath Bezbaroa’s house in Sambalpur received flak on Friday after Assam CM called up his Odisha counterpart Naveen Patnaik and expressed his objection.

Talking to Naveen over phone Sonowal urged him to make efforts in the direction of preserving the house, which is in a dilapidated condition, instead of bulldozing it. Sonowal also wrote a letter to Naveen yesterday over the issue which would be handed over to the latter today by Assam’s Cultural Affairs Minister Naba Kumar Doley and his media adviser Hrishikesh Goswami.

On the other hand several historians from the state have severely criticized Odisha Government and demanded that the house of Bezbaroa which played a great role in the litterateur’s immortal creations to be turned into a museum.

Odisha Government attracted widespread criticism over its efforts to demolish Bezbaroa’s house located on the banks of Mahanadi over past few days. The State Revenue Department has also acquired the whole Bezbaroa complex and trying to evict some of the illegal occupants from its premise to bulldoze it to make space for an approach road up to a newly constructed bridge on Mahanadi.

Notably, Bezbaroa is one of the noted modern Assamese litterateur and a stalwart of the Romanticism Era.
