Hirakud: The bird census has been concluded in Hirakud Dam of Odisha, said reliable reports in this regard on Friday. As many as 20 new varieties of birds have been found.

The annual bird census at Hirakud Reservoir in Sambalpur district of Odisha had begun on January 8, 2024. The census was carried out by the Hirakud Wildlife Division in the area of the reservoir adjoining Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, and Chhattisgarh.

The annual bird census in Hirakud Reservoir started at 6 am and continued till 5 pm. Reliable reports state that a total of 21 sectors have been formed for the same. 32 teams comprising of 78 people, including 33 ornithologists will be engaged in carrying out the census.

Members of the teams have been provided with binoculars and life jackets. A total of 32 fishing boats from Sambalpur, Bargah, and Jharsuguda will also be used for the census, confirmed reliable reports.

Fishermen experienced in bird counting will be assisting the team experts. Notably, the census of last year saw a total of 3,16,000 birds across 108 species in the Hirakud Wildlife Division.
