Veteran Politician N D Tiwari Passes Away At Delhi On His 93rd Birthday

New Delhi: Veteran Congress leader and former UP and Uttarakhand Chief Minister Narayan Dutt Tiwari passed away on his 93rd birthday at a private hospital in Delhi. He was suffering from prolonged illness and was undergoing treatment at Max Super Speciality Hospital.

Tiwari was admitted to the hospital in September last year after suffering a brain stroke. A team of doctors had been monitoring his condition since then. He breathed his last at 2.50 pm after he suffered a heart attack, hours after he turned 93.

Born on October 18, 1925 in Nainital, Tiwari holds a law degree from Allahabad University. He was first elected to the UP Assembly on a Praja Samajwadi Party ticket from Nainital in 1952 and 1957. He joined the Congress in 1963 and and elected to the UP Assembly from Kashipur in 1965.

He had formed Congress (T), after breaking away from the Congress, along with veteran Congress leader Arjun Singh in 1995 during the tenure of the then prime minister P V Narasimha Rao. However, he merged with Congress when the Sonia Gandhi took over the party’s reign.

ND Tiwari has served as  Union Minister in many of the Congress-led governments at the centre. He has served as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh for three terms besides being the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand from 2002-07.

Tiwari later served as the Governor of Andhra Pradesh from 2007-09 but had to resign following a sex scandal.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief at his demise. Taking to Twitter, PM Modi wrote, “Saddened by the passing away of Shri ND Tiwari Ji. A towering leader, he was known for his administrative skills. He will be remembered for his efforts towards industrial growth & working for the progress of UP & Uttarakhand, a state he steered in its initial days.”


Congress President Rahul Gandhi also conveyed his condolences. “I’m sorry to hear about the passing of Shri N D Tiwari ji an important and illustrious member of the Congress family, who was respected and admired across party lines. My condolences to his family in their time of grief. Om Shanti,” Rahul tweeted.
