Teachers’ Day 2021: Know why this day is so important in India

Teachers play a huge role in our lives. From giving the students a purpose to set up the students as successful citizens of the world, teachers have been inspiring the students. In order to recognise the hard work of our mentors and gurus, Teachers’ Day is celebrated in India.

In India, September 5 is celebrated as Teachers’ Day which marks the birthday of Dr Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan who was a highly-respected teacher, philosopher and prolific statesman.

He was the first Vice President of India (1952–1962) and also went on to become the second President of India (1962-1967). He was of the opinion that “teachers should be the best minds in the country.”

In 1962, when he took the office of the President of India, his students approached him to seek permission to celebrate September 5 as a special day. He instead asked them to observe this day as Teacher’s Day, to recognise the contribution of teachers to society. Since then, Teacher’s Day has been celebrated across schools, colleges, universities and educational institutions on this date.

Usually in schools and colleges, students put up several cultural performances, events and dramas for their teachers. Students also give their favourite teachers flowers, cards and gifts as a token of appreciation.

However owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, celebrations this year also will be virtual as many educational institutions continue to operate online.

Meanwhile, President Ram Nath Kovind will virtually honour 44 meritorious teachers on the occasion of Teacher’s Day. They will be honoured with the National Teacher’s Award. The Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Education RC Meena had announced about the same earlier this week.
