Shaktikanta Das appointed as Governor of Reserve Bank of India

New Delhi: Former finance secretary and current member of the finance commission Shaktikanta Das has been appointed as the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Tuesday.

According to the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, Das, who is a former Tamil Nadu cadre IAS officer and belongs to Odisha, will take charge from Urjit Patel who resigned from the post yesterday citing personal reasons.

Das will be in the post for a term of three years.

Born on February 26, 1957,  Das had retired as Economic Affairs Secretary in May 2017. Currently, he is a member of the Finance Commission of India and the government’s representative at the Group of 20 summits.

Last year, Das criticized the methodology of global rating agencies and sought a sovereign rating upgrade.  He has worked extensively in the budget division under both the NDA government and the previous coalition led by the Congress.

An IAS officer with masters’ degree from St. Stephen’s College, New Delhi, he served as the Joint Secretary, Ministry of Finance, Department of Expenditure, Government of India; Special Commissioner and Commissioner of Revenue Administration, Government of Tamil Nadu; Secretary, Industries Department in Government of Tamil Nadu and various other distinguished services. He also served as Secretary of the Industries Department of Government of Tamil Nadu.

Besides, Das served as a Non-Executive Director at Indian Bank from December 9, 2009, to December 5, 2012 following which he took charge as the Director of Oil and Natural Gas Corp. Ltd and then the Director at Life Insurance Corporation of India.
