New Delhi: On the final day of operations at the iconic 96-year-old Parliament House, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reminisced about the building’s historical journey, acknowledging its origins in the pre-Independence era as the Imperial Legislative Council. In his address to the Lok Sabha, Modi emphasized the significance of the contributions made by the Indian populace in the construction of this architectural gem initiated during the colonial era.

He shared a personal and emotional connection to the Parliament House, recalling his humble beginnings and expressing gratitude for the opportunities it had granted him. The Prime Minister acknowledged the building as the ‘temple of democracy’, where countless significant decisions were made for the nation, including historic events like the abrogation of Article 370 and the implementation of GST.

Modi also paid homage to previous leaders and their impactful speeches within the walls of the Parliament, highlighting the essence of continuity and unity that the building represents. He praised the role of journalists in relaying information to the nation from the old Parliament, crediting them for their vital contribution.

As India bids farewell to this historical edifice and shifts its legislative proceedings to the new complex, Modi emphasized the country’s rising stature on the global stage. He commended India’s strength, unity, and achievements, especially in the realm of science and technology, showcasing its prowess through endeavors like Chandrayaan-3.

The ongoing five-day special session commemorates the Parliament’s 75-year journey, starting from the Constituent Assembly. It will also address legislative matters, including the controversial Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners (Appointment, Conditions of Service, and Term of Office) Bill, 2023. The transition to the new Parliament complex is scheduled for 19th September.
