India deploys upgraded MiG-29 fighter jets squadron at Srinagar

India has deployed upgraded MiG-29 fighter jets at the Srinagar air base to tackle threats from both the Pakistani and Chinese fronts.

Srinagar: In a strategic move aimed at countering potential threats from both Pakistan and China, India has stationed a squadron of advanced MiG-29 fighter jets at the Srinagar air base. This squadron, known as the ‘Defender of the North,’ has taken over responsibilities from the MiG-21 squadron, which had traditionally safeguarded against threats from Pakistan.

The Srinagar air base is strategically located in the Kashmir valley, and its higher elevation presents unique challenges. The MiG-29, with its superior weight-to-thrust ratio, quick response time, advanced avionics, and long-range missiles, is well-suited to handle the border proximity and potential threats on both fronts.

Indian Air Force pilot Squadron Leader Vipul Sharma explained, “The MiG-29 meets all the necessary criteria, enabling us to effectively counter adversaries from both directions.” These jets have been upgraded with long-range air-to-air and air-to-ground missiles, thanks to special powers granted to the armed forces by the government for emergency procurement.

Furthermore, the aircraft possess the capability to jam enemy aircraft during conflicts, a crucial advantage. The upgrades also allow the MiG-29s to operate at night with night vision goggles, and their air-to-air refueling capability extends their range.

“The inclusion of air-to-ground armament, previously absent, significantly enhances the aircraft’s capabilities,” noted another pilot, Squadron Leader Shivam Rana. The skilled pilots, meticulously chosen by the Indian Air Force, are instrumental in maximizing the effectiveness of these aircraft.

The MiG-29s have been actively deployed in the Kashmir valley and the Ladakh sector since their relocation to the Srinagar air base in January. In the event of airspace violations by China, these jets are poised to be among the first responders. Notably, they were the initial aircraft deployed in the Ladakh sector following the Galwan clash of 2020, and they have successfully thwarted multiple attempts by Chinese forces since then.
