Former Maharashtra CM Manohar Joshi passes away at 86

Maharashtra: Former Maharashtra Chief Minister Manohar Joshi breathed his last at a hospital in Mumbai during the early hours of Friday. He passed away at the age of 86.

Reliable reports state that he was admitted to the Hinduja hospital in Mumbai on February 21. This came after he suffered from a cardiac arrest on the same day. He was undergoing treatment at the ICU and passed away at around 3 AM on Friday.

It is noteworthy mentioning that the veteran Shiv Sena leader was admitted to the same hospital in May 2023 after suffering from a brain haemorrhage.

Notably, Manohar Joshi was the first from the undivided Shiv Sena to hold the post of state Chief Minister. He served as the Maharashtra CM from 1995 to 1999 under the coalition government of Shiv Sena-BJP. Moreover, he was also elected as a Member of Parliament. He also served as the speaker of Lok Sabha from 2002 to 2004 when the Vajpayee government was in power.

Manohar Joshi began his political career in the year 1967. However, the veteran leader had been away from active politics for quite some time.

Joshi’s political career started shaping up after he held a seat in the Maharashtra Legislative council under Shiv Sena. Further, it is also to be noted that he served as the Mayor of Mumbai for about one year during 1976-1977.
