Computer Science Engineering At IIT Madras Made Free For All

Indian Institute of Technology Madras, one of the highest scoring IIT Colleges in the country, has made a unique start to make its Computer Science courses available for all.

The courses have been made available online and for free, in order to maintain accessibility for all. The CSE Department of IITM has created an online portal constituting of the core courses for Computer Science.

The materials provided at the portal can be accessed by any institution, faculty or student across India.

The core Computer Science courses that have been made available on the portal:  nsm.iitm.ac.in/cse/ are based on programming, computer organisation, data structures and algorithms.

Each course even has YouTube recordings of live lectures taught to the students at IITM amid the pandemic.

Talking about this initiative, Prof. C. Chandra Sekhar, HOD, Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), mentioned that the recordings of live lectures for CSE core courses at the undergraduate level and the graduate level, are expected to be helpful to the students in engineering colleges to learn the core concepts and principles of the subjects of these courses in the correct way.

He further added that it is also going to be beneficial to the teaching faculties in engineering colleges to get well versed with effective teaching, important and fundamental subjects in CSE and methods to inculcate problem solving skills in the students.

Dr. Rupesh Nasre, Associate Professor at CSE, IITM said that Computer Science is one of the mostly sought disciplines in the country, especially at the IITs. Hence, this portal will be of major help to students who could not study at IIT Madras for different reasons. The students accessing the portal will share the same curriculum followed in the institute. This new initiative shall ensure quality study material being accessible to all.

Those availing the opportunities provided by the portal, can also attend self-assessment tests and quizzes in order to test their knowledge, growth and improvement.

Kovvuri Sravankumar Reddy, third year B.Tech student, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, shared his experience on working with the initiative. He said that the difficulty of the quizzes offered is on par with the ones conducted by the institute.

The department is planning to engage the senior students of the institution in conducting live tutorials and doubt clarifying sessions. It is also aiming at refining the portal and is looking for scopes to add more content for the interested ones.
