At 96, woman tops exam in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram: You can achieve anything at any age if you have the willpower. This has been proved by a 96-year-old Karthyayani Amma of Kerala as she has topped the Kerala State Literacy Mission’s examination.

Karthyayani, a native of Alappuzha, was the oldest candidate among the 43,330, who appeared for the literacy examination at the Cheppad Government LP School.

She had taken admissions in the literacy mission’s programme with the aim of completing her graduation. However, became the topper with 98 per cent marks.

A total of 8,215 members from the SC community and 2,882 from the ST community took up the exam. Out of 43,330 candidates, 42,933 of them had passed the exam in the first phase of Aksharalakshyam with 99.084 pass percentage.

While with 10,866 passed candidates, Palakkad district stood first, the capital city came second with 9,412 candidates passing the test.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan is slated to hand over Karthyayani the certificate during the certificate distribution ceremony in Thiruvananthapuram on Thursday.
