Irked over Kangaroo court’s order girl consumes poisonous substance in police station

Jodhpur: A 22-year-old girl named Divya Choudahry never wanted to be a burden for her parents. She decided to build her own career. She studied hard and managed to get the job of an accountant.

After getting the job, Choudahry thought that life would go normally. However, her parents started pressurising her to honour the promise – to marry a boy – they had made.

She was engaged to one Jeevraj, when she was three years old. When she tried her best to convince them about her unwillingness not to marry, the boy’s family called for a village meeting on October 25.

During the meeting of Kangaroo court, her family was slapped a cash penalty of Rs 16 lakh.

Despite paying the amount to the panchayat, Jeevraj’s family continued to mount pressure on Divya. Finding no means of solace, she approached the police several times and finally a complaint was registered against Jeevraj’s family and the panchayat on Thursday.

However, when the Kangaroo court came to know that Divya had approached the police, it made a fresh demand of Rs 20 lakh. Besides, the panchayat demanded a public apology and withdrawal of the complaint so as to avoid social boycott.

The Kangaroo court was slated to hold a meeting over the matter on Sunday. However, Divya rushed to the police station and consumed a poisonous substance in front of the police officials and her family.

Divya was rushed to the hospital by the police and her family members and is now said to be stable.
