Mahindra Thar 5-door launch postponed to 2024, No new launches in 2023

Mahindra That five-door SUV will not debut in India this year. The company has also revealed that there will be no new launches this year.

Mahindra and Mahindra has confirmed that the five-door Thar SUV will not debut in India this year. Mahindra has announced a new launch timeline for Thar 5-door, which could be in 2024. The information was announced by Executive Director (Auto & Farm Sectors) of Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd, Mr. Rajesh Jejurikar at the company’s recent press meat for Q4 and FY23 results.

The executive has also confirmed that He also said that Mahindra won’t be launching any new product this year. 5-door Thar has been spotted multiple times in near-production format. It’s more than a year since the first test mule was spotted. The postpone of the launch of the SUv could be reasoned to the long-awaiting period of the ongoing Thar model. The company could be aiming to clear the existing deliveries for the Thar then move on to the 5-door version.

Mahindra Thar SUV reportedly crossed 1 lakh sales milestone in less than 2.5 years. As per the company, the SUV had 58,000 open bookings as of May 1 since its launch in October 2020.  Mahindra Thar SUV directly competes with Force Gurkha.

The carmaker is reportedly ramping up production to clear the backlog of Thar. Production capacity of the current model of Mahindra Thar SUV currently stands at 8,000 units per month. Keeping the demand of the SUV, Mahindra is reportedly planning to increase production capacity to 10,000 units per month.

5-door Mahindra Thar features, specs

The 5-door Thar will be based on Scorpio N’s platform. The SUV will be available in both 2WD and 4WD versions like the current three-door iterations of Mahindra Thar SUV. On the inside, 5-door Thar is expected to features cruise control, 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system and automatic climate control. For safety, the SUV might get six airbags, ESP with roll-over mitigation, hill hold and hill descent control, ABS with EBD and brake assist and rear parking camera.

Engine options for 5-door Thar will likely be the same as the running one. However, the engines could be tweaked to achieve a higher state of tune. The current 2.2-litre diesel unit produces 130 PS of max power and 300 Nm of peak torque. The engine is mated to either a 6-speed manual and 6-speed torque converter automatic. The 2.0-litre petrol motor makes 150 PS and 300 Nm of torque with the 6-speed manual and 320 Nm with the 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox.

The Mahindra Thar RWD comes in 3 variants: RWD Diesel MT variant, LX RWD Diesel MT trim variant and LX RWD Petrol AT variant. The SUV is available with Everest White, Aquamarine, Blazing Bronze, Red Rage, Napoli Black, and Galaxy Grey colour options. buyers also have an option to choose from hard-top, soft-top and convertible-top formats.

Currently, Mahindra Thar is offered in both manual as well as automatic transmissions with choice of petrol as well as diesel. The SUV can be purchased at a starting price of Rs 10.54 lakh (ex-showroom) for the base model. The top-end variant, on the other hand costs Rs 16.78 lakh (ex-showroom).
