Bhubaneswar: The ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has deferred its symposium on Odisha-Chhattisgarh Mahanadi River water dispute to decide its next course of action in the issue till April 22, said party spokesperson Amar Prasad Satpathy on Saturday. The symposium which would be participated by ministers, BJD MPs, MLAs, elected representatives at block, town and zilla parishad level from at least 15 districts was earlier scheduled for April 15.

Apprising media persons on the rescheduling of the symposium Satpathy said, representatives of  Angul, Bargarh, Boudh, Cuttack, Deogarh, Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, Subarnapur, Nayagarh, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Puri and Khurda would take part in the symposium which would be held at the party headquarter in the state capital Bhubaneswar.

“A preparatory meet on the upcoming symposium would be held tomorrow at the party headquarter also where the agenda of the meeting would be decided,” said Satpathy.

Replying to another question on the issue the ruling party spokesperson insisted that the Odisha Government would also raise the Mahanadi issue at the conference of Eastern States called by the Centre on April 16.

In its attempt to bring its focus back on Mahanadi water dispute the BJD held a press conference last Monday where party leaders like Prasanna Acharya, Debi Prasad Mishra, Sanjay Das Burma and Atanu Sabyasachi Nayak announced for the symposium.

The ruling party leaders in the state are vehemently criticising Centre’s inordinate delay in announcing the terms of reference of the Mahanadi tribunal which the latter had notified on March 12. The notification came under pressure from the Supreme Court directive, they feel.
