Angul: A woman along with her 17-year-old niece was killed after lightning struck them at Jarapada village under Derjang police limits in the district on Wednesday.
One Santilata Pradhan and her niece Baisakhi Pradhan were killed by lightning strike while they were working on a paddy field this afternoon.
While Santilata died on the spot, Baisakhi was rescued and rushed to the District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) in a critical condition. However, she breathed her last while undergoing treatment.
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted moderate thunderstorm, lightning and intense rainfall at one or two places over Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, Kalahandi, Nabarangpur, Malkangiri, Kandhamal, Nuapara, Sonepur, Boudh, Kandhamal, Puri, Nayagarh, Khurda districts till 9 pm today.
Besides, the weatherman also said that heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to occur in several places of the state in the next 24 hours.
