Baripada: Mystery shrouds the death of a young woman and her 9-month-old daughter who were charred to death under mysterious conditions in Jayabilla village in Samakhunta panchayat in Mayurbhanj district last night.
The deceased woman identified as Thakuramani Singh (20) was married to Sunaram Singh for one year.
Thakuramani, who was on a visit to her aunt’s house for last couple of days, was seen on fire along with her child at around 11.30 last night. After the relatives rescued the victim along with her child in critical condition and called up her husband, the latter rushed the duo to Baripada Medical College immediately.
Doctors declared the child brought dead upon reaching the hospital. The woman died of burn injuries under treatment subsequently.
While the cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, the deceased’s husband claimed that she was mentally sick and might have committed suicide after killing her child.
“She might have doused herself along with the child with kerosene and set ablaze. I was away from the spot and hence don’t know what exactly happened. There was no dispute between me and my wife,” said Sunaram.
Police have seized the bodies for autopsy and started investigation into the case.
