Odisha is ready to beat Malaria: CM Naveen Patnaik

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on the occasion of the World Malaria Day today stated that Odisha is ready to beat the disease.

Taking to his twitter handle, Patnaik requested all to combine efforts to build on the significant achievements in reducing morbidity and mortality and march ahead in the Mission for eliminating Malaria from Odisha.


Renowned sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik also created a beautiful sand art appealing all to work towards ending Malaria.

Odisha Health Minister Pratap Jena also said that the state has set a benchmark in international level in its efforts in curbing Malaria. “Odisha has set a benchmark in International level with case studies being studied with reference from @WHO and others. One of the worst hit states in Malaria to most improved one in recent years,” tweeted Jena.

The Health Minister also said that Odisha government is planning to set up a Malaria research centre in Koraput district. Jena said this while addressing a state-level function organised by National Vector-borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP), by directorate of health services in collaboration with Tata Trusts at Jaydev Bhawan here.

The proposed centre will be used for research purposes with regard to prevalence of malaria and mosquitoes, he added.

Odisha government has taken different initiatives to check the spread of Malaria in the state. It had launched the Durgama Anchalare Malaria Nirakaran (DAMAN) scheme to control and prevent malaria. Besides, its Health and Family Welfare Department had distributed the Long Lasting Insecticidal Nets (LLINs) in 17 Malaria- prone districts and conducted several awareness progrmme.

The World Malaria Day (WMD) was established in May 2007 during the 60th session of the World Health Assembly, WHO’s decision-making body, and the day is observed every year on 25 April to recognize global efforts to control malaria.

Each year the WMD is observed on a specific theme. This year’s theme is “Malaria: A disease without borders.”
