Soro: In yet another case of sexual assault on minor girl in the state, a youth was held by police after trying to rape a Class 9 girl in Kasabajaipur village near here in Balasore district on Tuesday.
The accused has been identified as Umashankar Choudhury, a resident of the same village.
As per the complaint filed with Khantapada Police in connection with the case, the incident took place last evening while the victim was returning to her home after tuition. The accused was consuming alcohol along with two of his aides near a village road at that time and reportedly overpowered the girl to drag her to a nearby bushy area. He tried to rape the girl later with the help of the aides there.
However, some commuters reached the spot and rescued the girl from the clutches of the culprit hearing her screams. While the other two managed to escape from the spot, the accused was detained by the locals and later handed over to Khantapada Police.
Police have forwarded the accused to court today after conducting his medical examination along with the victim.
