Union Cabinet approves 4 MMT Strategic Petroleum Reserves in Odisha’s Chandikhol

Bhubaneswar: The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved establishment of additional 6.5 Million Metric Tonne (MMT) Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) facilities at two locations of the country including Odisha’s Chandikhol.

The other place where the SPR will come up is Karnataka’s Padur.

The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the SPR facilities which will be underground rock caverns.

While the SPR facility, Chandikhol will have a capacity of 4 MMT, the Padur SPR will have a capacity of 2.5 MMT.

The construction phase is likely to generate significant direct and indirect employment opportunities in the states of Odisha and Karnataka.

Notably, the Union government had announced setting up of two additional SPRs during the budget announcement for 2017-18.
