Devotees hurt by Lord Jagannath’s namesake facing drug trade charge

Puri JagannathBhubaneswar: Millions of devotees of Lord Jagannath in Odisha and elsewhere were distressed after the name  a revered by them was repeatedly flashed by the media for all the wrong reasons.

Telugu film director Puri Jagannath on Wednesday appeared before the Telangana excise department’s special investigation team (SIT) for questioning in connection with the probe into the illicit drug trade recently busted in Hyderabad.

The devotees were sore because the director in the dock shares his name with “Lord Jagannath,” worshipped worldwide in general and Odisha in particular.

The Jagannath temple in Puri, Odisha is particularly significant in Hinduism, and is regarded as one of the Char Dhams (pilgrimage sites) in the country. The world famous Ratha Jatra is also dedicated to Lord Jagannath.

The actor’s name hurt the religious sentiments of the people.

“The actor should change his name and apologise unconditionally for his involvement in illegal activities,” said a Hindu devotee Bibhti Bhusan Subudhi while talking to Kalinga TV.

“The law of the land will punish him for his alleged involvement in the drug case, if proved;  but not for his name,” he added.
