UK PM Rishi Sunak to begin two-day visit to Israel

United Kingdom Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is set to visit Israel in the midst of the ongoing conflict sparked by a recent attack on Israel.

United Kingdom Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is set to visit Israel in the midst of the ongoing conflict sparked by a recent attack by Hamas on Israel. During his visit, he will meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Isaac Herzog before heading to other regional capitals.

PM Sunak is visiting to offer his condolences for the lives lost in Israel and Gaza due to the October 7 attack by Gaza-based Palestinian Hamas gunmen. He expressed his condolences, stating, “Every civilian death is a tragedy, and too many lives have been lost following Hamas horrific acts of terror.”

Sunak also expressed his concern about the recent Gaza hospital attack, which reportedly resulted in over 500 casualties. He described it as a potential “watershed moment” for leaders in the region around the world to come together to further the dangerous escalation of the conflict. He pledged that Britain would be at the forefront of these efforts.

The UK Prime Minister’s visit follows US President Joe Biden’s trip to Israel. President Biden, after his visit, stated that, based on what he saw, it seems the deadly explosion at the Gaza hospital was caused by “the other team” and not the Israeli military. This supports the Israeli assertion that a “misfired” rocket by the Palestinian militant group Islamic Jihad was responsible for the tragedy.

In addition to Prime Minister Sunak’s visit, British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly, who visited Israel last week, will be travelling to Egypt, Turkey, and Qatar over the next three days. His mission is to discuss the ongoing conflict and seek a peaceful resolution.
