Man touches Spanish female reporter inappropriately during live broadcast, arrested after video goes viral

Spanish authorities have taken a man into custody on suspicion of sexually assaulting a journalist during a live television broadcast.

Madrid: Spanish authorities have taken a man into custody on suspicion of sexually assaulting a journalist during a live television broadcast.

Isa Balado was in the midst of reporting on a robbery in Madrid on Tuesday when the incident unfolded. The man in question approached her and appeared to touch her buttocks, despite his subsequent denial when confronted by the journalist.

In a rather extraordinary moment during the live broadcast, the programme’s host, Nacho Abad, interjected, saying, “Isa, forgive me for interrupting you… but did he just touch your bottom?”

Ms. Balado confirmed the incident, prompting Mr. Abad to instruct her to put the individual on camera. The camera then showed both Isa Balado and the man, who remained alongside her, appearing to smile and laugh.

Addressing the man, Ms. Balado asserted, “As much as you want to ask what channel we are from, do you really have to touch my bottom? I’m doing a live show, and I’m working.”

The man denied the accusation, even attempting to playfully touch her head as he walked away.

Subsequently, police announced the arrest of a man for an alleged assault on a reporter during a live television broadcast in a statement shared on social media.

Mediaset España, the owner of the news channel, expressed its strong support for Ms. Balado, describing the situation she endured as “absolutely intolerable.” The company also “categorically repudiates any form of harassment or aggression.”

Spain’s Labour Minister, Yolanda Díaz, condemned the incident, emphasizing that it should not go unpunished. She stated on social media, “It is machismo that makes journalists suffer sexual assaults like this, and the aggressors are unrepentant in front of the camera.”

This incident comes amidst an ongoing debate surrounding sexism in Spain, sparked by the former Spanish FA president Luis Rubiales, who was criticized for kissing World Cup winner Jenni Hermoso on the lips during the Women’s World Cup final. The controversy ultimately led to Rubiales’ resignation and a summons to court on allegations of sexual assault and coercion.
