Indo-Canadian wins prestigious House of Commons Seat in Calgary Heritage

An Indo-Canadian candidate, has emerged victorious in the House of Commons by-election in Calgary Heritage in Alberta.

Alberta: Shuvaloy Majumdar, an Indo-Canadian candidate, has emerged victorious in the House of Commons by-election in Calgary Heritage in Alberta. The prestigious seat was previously held by former Prime Minister Stephen Harper until his retirement and was left vacant after MP Bob Benzen’s resignation last year.

The 43-year-old Shuvaloy Majumdar secured the House of Commons seat for the Conservative Party with an impressive 15,803 votes. He won the seat by defeating his closest rival, Liberal candidate Elliot Weinstein, who garnered 3,463 votes, as reported by Global News.

Following his win, Majumdar’s competitor, Elliot Weinstein, took to Twitter to extend his congratulations. He expressed confidence that Majumdar would represent all constituents of Calgary Heritage with honor and respect. In response, Majumdar thanked Weinstein for his graciousness and acknowledged the enriching impact of strong candidates in democracy.

Born and raised in Calgary to Indian-origin immigrant parents, Shuvaloy Majumdar has a distinguished background. He previously served as a policy adviser to both former Prime Minister Stephen Harper and former Conservative Foreign Minister John Baird. His leadership roles in promoting democratic reform in Afghanistan and Iraq have earned him recognition. This includes the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal in 2002 for his efforts in combating human trafficking.

With his election victory, he has become the third Conservative Member of Parliament of South Asian origin. He has joined the ranks of Tim Uppal and Jasraj Singh Hallan.
