New Delhi: India congratulated opposition Ibrahim Mohamed Solih for emerging victorious in the presidential polls in Maldives. Through an official statement, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) welcomed the successful completion of the third presidential election process in the Maldives which, according to preliminary information, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has won.

The MEA statement congratulated Solih and expressed that the elections reflected Maldives’ commitment to democratic values and the rule of law.

India also hoped that the Maldivian Election Commission will officially confirm the result at the earliest.

As per reports, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih defeated President Abdulla Yameen in the Presidential elections. The ties between New Delhi and Male had turned sour after President Yameen declared Emergency in the country in February this year. India had also criticised Maldives for this and had exhorted the authorities to release political prisoners. The emergency in Maldives was lifted 45 days later.
