‘Earthquake fish’ spotted in Thailand, sparks fear among local people

A rare fish, known as the ‘Earthquake fish,’ was spotted by fishermen in Thailand, sparking worry about an impending earthquake or tsunami.

A rare fish, popularly known as the ‘Earthquake fish,’ was spotted by fishermen in Thailand. This sparked worry in people as they think that a severe earthquake or tsunami might be on its way.

Otherwise known as Oarfish, the eerie looking creature was captured by the Thai fishermen on January 3 in the Andaman Sea.

The fact that the ‘Earthquake fish’ was seen just a couple of days after the massive earthquake in Japan, caught the attention of locals residing on the Southwest coast of Thailand.

The Japanese folklore has it that spotting an Oarfish in the shallow waters can be considered as a warning for an earthquake or tsunami.

The Oarfish, or the ‘harbinger of doom,’ is generally found at depth of 1000 meters inside waters. It is noteworthy mentioning that the fish is rarely ever spotted by humans.

Notably, local people believe that this encounter with the Oarfish might indicate a concern for an earthquake or a tsunami along the coast of the Andaman Sea.

Expert advice on this matter suggests that this might have been due to cold water entering into Andaman Sea from the Indian Ocean.
