70-year-old Uber driver earns Rs 23 lakh by cancelling over 30% rides; Know how

A 70-year-old part-time Uber driver in the US has disclosed an unconventional strategy that enabled him to earn over Rs 23 lakh last year.

San Francisco: A 70-year-old part-time Uber driver in the United States has disclosed an unconventional strategy that enabled him to earn more than 28,000 dollar (over Rs 23 lakh) last year. Bill, who turned to Uber for additional income following his retirement six years ago, achieved this impressive figure by accepting less than 10 percent of ride requests and cancelling over 30 percent of trips.

Bill explained that he specifically opted for ride requests that he considered worthwhile, resulting in significant earnings even with a high cancellation rate.

“I spend a lot of time saying no. I don’t work unless we have a surge,” Bill stated.

His strategy involved strategically positioning himself around the airport and bars during peak hours allowing him to secure higher-paying rides.

Bill elaborated on this approach, saying, “When a plane lands and people request Uber, the price jumps drastically. A 20-minute ride goes from $ 10 to $ 20 to $ 40 and sometimes $ 50. The driver gets just short of 50 percent, so a 35-minute ride can yield you $ 30 to $ 60.

He noted that the most common surge periods occur between 10 pm and 2:30 am on Friday and Saturday nights.

Additionally, Bill avoided taking “one-way rides” to maximize his earnings. He recounted an instance where he drove a customer for nearly two hours within his city and received $27 (Rs 2,246) for the ride.

It’s important to note that these strategies carry certain risks, as Uber generally discourages drivers from refusing or canceling trips based on the destination. Nonetheless, Bill was willing to rely on his unconventional methods and drive only when it financially benefited him.

“I drive to get out and don’t need the money. I love it,” he emphasized.
