6.1 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Papua In Eastern Indonesia

Jakarta: US Seismologists said a 6.1-magnitude earthquake rocked Papua in eastern Indonesia on Sunday. However, no tsunami warning was issued.

The epicenter of the quake was about 158km south-southwest of the province’s capital Jayapura at a depth of 61km. It was felt in Jayapura, but residents didn’t panic, a military spokesman said.

There were no immediate reports of casualties. Officials are still assessing the impact of the quake.

Due to its geographic location on the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, Indonesia experiences frequent seismic and volcanic activity when tectonic plates collide.

Last September, a 7.5 magnitude earthquake followed by a Tsunami had killed more than 2,200 in Palu on Sulawesi island. In December 2004, a 9.1-magnitude earthquake had struck Aceh province, causing a tsunami and killing more than 170,000 people.
