22 Killed In Floods And Landslide In Indonesia

Jakarta: Landslides and Flash floods triggered by heavy rains have left at least 22 people dead and many missing in western Indonesia. Incessant rainfall since Wednesday triggered flooding and landslides that wrecked havoc in several districts on Sumatra island.

Authorities have said at least 17 people were confirmed dead in the last three days in North Sumatra province, while five others were killed in West Sumatra. Eleven students of an Islamic boarding school in Mandailing Natal district of North Sumatra died on Friday afternoon during class as they were struck by a building which was destroyed by the flash floods. Besides, dozens of houses have also been destroyed.

The disaster and search and rescue agency are facing a lot of difficulty in carrying out operations in the flood-affected districts due to frequent landslides that refuse to halt.

The Indonesian archipelago is prone to landslides, flooding and torrential rainfall lashing the tropical island nation. This year in February, 12 people died when an avalanche of mud and rock cascaded down a steep slope in Central Java. Prior to this, nearly 50 people died when heavy rainfall caused landslides in Central Java province of Indonesia in June 2016.
