India to soon have its own DNS for safer and faster browsing

New Delhi: The Indian Government shall very soon roll out its own Doman Name Server (DNS) for faster browsing and more secure browsing experience in India. It will also ensure that the citizens’ data is stored locally.

The Domain Name System (DNS) is the phonebook of the Internet. Humans access information online through domain names, while the web browsers interact through Internet Protocol (IP) addresses. DNS translates domain names to IP addresses so browsers can load Internet resources.

“The main aim of bringing our own public DNS is to ensure availability, particularly for smaller Interest Service Providers (ISPs) who don’t have credible DNS. Bigger ones usually have their own DNS,” an IT Ministry official said

“We are expecting it to be ready in next four to six months, and we will be doing a proof of concept (PoC) starting next week,” the official said, adding that the new system would be completely secure and will always be available with faster responses. The rollout will be executed by the National Informatics Centre – the technology arm of the government.

The Narendra Modi government is eyeing a new and robust platform in the wake of critical digital services being delivered online requiring enhanced security to discourage cyber-attacks and a quicker site loading time.

If a user inadvertently accesses a malicious or phishing site, the new public system would immediately open up a page or popup to alert the user of such potential threat so that the suspicious resource could be avoided, the official who is aware of the initiative, said the official.

The ministry, as part of its ongoing awareness campaign for a safer Internet, also plans to reach out to end-users to educate them on DNS and how they could shift to an Indian public DNS if they desired.
