What Does the Orange Dot in iPhone Status Bar Mean?

The orange indicator next to the notch on your iPhone indicates that the microphone on your device is being used by an app. That means whenever an app uses the microphone on the device, an orange indicator will appears in the iPhone status bar.

You will see an orange dot on your iPhone while using Siri voice commands, recording notes, videos from the camera app, and when you are in a Clubhouse audio room, among other things.

So, now users can notice which app is using the microphone and whether they are listening to your conversation in secret.

If you ever notice that the orange dot on your device when you have not turned on the microphone or given mic permission to any apps then you should be alert.

Note that the orange indicator will appear if the user have enabled the “Differentiate Without Color” feature on your iPhone.

How to disable Camera and Microphone Permissions for Apps

Follow the steps below to disable orange or green dot on your iPhone.

  1. Go to Settings -> Privacyon your iPhone.
  2. Go to “Privacy” settings menu.
  3. Select the access the “Camera” and “Microphone” permissions
  4. Turn off the toggle next to the name of the app for which you want to disable the camera (green dot) or microphone (orange dot) on your iPhone.
