Berhampur: Continuing with its crackdown on criminal elements in the district, Ganjam police arrested Gadadhar Swain, a hardcore criminal, after an encounter at Balibagada village under Rambha police limits on Monday night. However, an associate of Gadadhar managed to give the cops a slip during the raid.
After getting a tip-off on the presence of Gadadhar with an aide in the village, Ganjam police conducted a raid on their hideout late yesterday night. Finding themselves surrounded, the criminal duo opened fire at the police team to escape safely. As the police team returned the fire, Gadadhar sustained a bullet injury on his right leg. He was later arrested. The aide of the criminal managed to flee the spot during the encounter.
Police recovered a pistol and four live bullets from the possession of the criminal.
Gadadhar was rushed to the Chhatrapur Community Health Centre (CHC) by police following the encounter and then shifted to the MKCG Medical College and Hospital.
Police said the arrested criminal has around 20 cases of attack, robbery and murder pending against him at police stations across the district.
