Tension in Kandhamal after Class VIII girl delivers baby, Min orders probe

Phulbani: Putting a question mark on the safety and security of girl students in the residential schools in Kandhamal district, a Class VIII student of a Sevashram school in Baliguda delivered a baby girl in her hostel today.

Angry locals took to the streets and blocked the NH-59 in protest to the incident and demanding action against the school authorities. Later, they resorted to demonstration before the concerned school by burning tyres.

Vehicular movement on Daringbadi-Berhampur-Baliguda route came to a standstill due to the protest and hundreds of vehicles remained stranded on either side of the road.

Later, Baliguda SDPO Kusalkar Nitin Dagdu intervened into the matter and arrested one local youth over his involvement in the case.

Local Police also detained the headmistress of the concerned school for quizzing, following which the road blockade was lifted.

The minor mother and her newborn has been admitted to Baliguda Hospital where their health conditions are being checked, informs source.

Meanwhile, Odisha SC and ST Development Minister Ramesh Majhi has also ordered Kandhamal Collector to conduct a probe into the incident and submit a report.
