Odisha Fire Service Inspects Coaching Centres In Four Cities

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Fire Service today conducted an inspection of fire safety measures in as many as 43 coaching centres in Rourkela, Sambalpur, Balasore and Berhampur in the wake of the recent fire mishap at Gujarat which claimed 22 lives.

Fire officials said that most of the coaching centres inspected today lacked adequate firefighting measures. “In some places fire extinguishers were available but other equipments to deal with fire mishap need to be installed. Staircases, corridors and escape routes were found to be blocked while most of the centres don’t have adequate exit signage to guide the occupants during an emergency,” said a fire official.

Fire officials said that notices will be served to the coaching centres to fulfil the shortcomings within a specific time period. During the exercise, the fire officials sensitized the staffs and students about fire safety measures. The fire officials also educated them the methods to avoid smoke inhalation and evacuation.

The department has earlier carried out similar inspection of coaching centres in the twin cities of Cuttack and Bhubaneswar on Monday.
