Mortal remains of Odia mountaineer Kalpana Dash consigned to flames

Puri: The mortal remains of ace Odia woman mountaineer Kalpana Dash was consigned to the flames at Swargadwara in Puri in the wee hours today.

The cremation of the late mountaineer was performed by her brother Pradip Dash at around 1.30 am in the presence of hundreds of well-wishers.

In the morning yesterday, the body was flown back to Biju Patanik International Airport (BPIA) in the city from Nepal’s Kathmandu via New Delhi, for which the entire cost was borne by the government. Later, the mortal remain was taken to Kalingat Stadium where people from different walks of life took paid their last tribute to the able mountaineer and bid adieu.

Kalpana’s body was taken to his home town Dhenkanal where his relatives took part in a procession with teary eyes to say her good bye for the last journey to the Swargadwara.

Notably, Kalpana, who was having a number of laurels to her name was a part of a three-member women mountaineers’ team which scaled up to the summit of Mt Everest on May 23 succumbed due to sickness at balcony area at a height of around 8,600 feet.

The mishap took place at around 12.55, as per the Himalayan Times, a newspaper based in Nepal.

With Kalpana’s demise the State had lost a renowned sportsperson.
