Miscreants kill former sarpanch for requesting information under RTI Act

Sambalpur: A former sarpanch was hacked to death by a group of miscreants for filing an RTI request in Salebhata village under Naktideul block in Sambalpur district last night.

The deceased has been identified as Parshuram Pradhan.

Pradhan was returning home after completing some pending work in a nearby village at around 9.30 PM in the night when the attack took place. A group of miscreants who were waiting near Palsaburai village attacked him with daggers and bludgeons in which he sustained grievous injuries and bled profusely.

The victim was rescued in an unconscious state from the spot by his family and rushed to Redhakhol CHC. He was later shifted to Burla medical but succumbed under treatment.

“My father had a long-running enmity with a group of persons in the village for their unlawful activities. He had recently requested for information under RTI Act which the accused believed would go against their interest and killed my father. I suspect the involvement of at least five villagers namely, Dasuri Dhala, Rushi Dhala, Ratish Dhala, Govind Dhala and Rakesh Dhala in the murder,” said Tuna Pradhan, son of the deceased.

Police have lodged a case in the incident and started investigation
