Bhubaneswar: One female Hippopotamus died at Nandankanan zoo this morning. The 10-year-old hippo was observed with loss of appetite on September 30 along with swelling in the left face near the mouth.
Zoo officials said that the treatment of the animal started immediately with oral medication and later though injection. “But it showed no sign of improvement and finally died this morning. The population of hippos has decreased to 13 including eight females,” said a zoo official. He also said that they are waiting for the postmortem report of the animal to ascertain the cause of death.
On Thursday the zoo has received one pair of Capuchin and one pair of Squirrel Monkey from Chennai.
