Denied medical facility, woman delivers baby in hospital drain

Jeypore: In an egregious example of poor maternity care available in the state, an expectant mother was compelled to deliver a child inside a drain near Koraput District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) here on Friday.

The woman from Janiguda village under Mastiput panchayat in the district visited the hospital this morning along with her husband, who had developed some illness. However, during the check-up of her husband by the doctors at the hospital, the woman felt labour pain and needed assistance from the medical staffs. But much to her dismay, nurses present at the DHH asked her to produce Mamata Yojana beneficiary card before availing any treatment.

Unable to produce the necessary medical documents pertaining to her pregnancy, the woman chose to rush to an unused dry drain located behind the hospital canteen to deliver her child. The hospital staffs responded hours after both the mother and the new-born lay unattended inside the drain and shifted them into the wards.

The incident has sparked sharp reaction among the locals who are demanding action against the hospital staffs for such negligence.
