Bargarh: Taking prompt and tough action in the Biju Setu collapse incident near Jamdol Debenpalli on Jeera River yesterday night, Bheden police arrested two suspended engineers of the state Rural Development department this morning.
Assistant Engineer Kamalakanta Taria and Junior Engineer Manoranjan Mohapatra were takenaken into custody minutes before state Textiles and Handlooms minister and Attabira MLA Snehangini Chhuria visited the bridge collapse site today and took stock of the situation. Chhuria said the contractor, who had been given the tender for the construction of the bridge would also be arrested soon.
Charges under section 337 and 338 under IPC have been slapped against the arrested engineer duo, informed the police.
Rural Development Minister Bikram Keshari Arukha yesterday suspended the Executive Engineer, the Assistant Engineer and the Junior Engineer of the department for dereliction of duty in the case.
Notably, the Biju Setu on Jeera River was being constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 8.5 crores under the Biju Setu Yojna of the Odisha Government. It caved in last night leaving around five persons injured, who were rushed to the Bargarh District Headquarters Hospital.
