Abhijit Iyer Mitra arrested for his derogatory remarks on Odisha

Bhubaneswar/ Delhi: In a major breakthrough, Abhijit Iyer Mitra, a journalist and a friend of former Kendrapara MP Baijayant Panda, was arrested today in Delhi in connection to his series of derogatory remarks on the State of Odisha and its people.

Abhjit was arrested from the Hazrat Nizamuddin area in the national capital, police sources said.

The controversial journalist was interrogated at Nizamuddin Police Station. He will be produced in Saket Court after a medical check-up, sources added.

Earlier on the day, Odisha Assembly Speaker Pradip Amat formed a 6-member House Committee to investigate the issues of derogatory remarks by Abhijit.

Leader of Opposition Narasingha Mishra will be the chairman of the said House Committee, while legislators Debi Prasad Mishra, KV Singh Deo, Pramila Mallick, Arun Sahoo and Sanjay Das Burma are the other members of the Committee.

In the Odisha Assembly today, MLAs cutting across party lines vehemently criticized  Abhijit for his deliberate attempt to defame Odia culture, sculptures, monuments, MLAs and Journalists in the state.

On September 15, Abhijit Iyre along with Baijayant Panda and senior journalist Aarti Tikoo visited Puri, Konark, Chilika and other places of the State in a helicopter owned by IMFA.

The chopper, in which the trio was travelling, was later seized by Odisha police for violating the ‘no-fly zone’ following a complaint lodged by Chilika Development Authority. IMFA is a company run by the former MP’s family.
