5-year-old sick elephant dies in Mayurbhanj

Baripada: In yet another pachyderm death in the state, a five-year-old elephant died of sickness on roadside near Chaturighat area under Karanjia Forest Division in Mayurbhanj district today.

As per the report, the jumbo died of dehydration caused by infectious dysentery.

The sickness of the jumbo came to fore yesterday after some locals of Chaturighat spotted it lying on roadside and being guarded by a herd. They immediately took the matter to the notice of the forest officials.

While the forest officials rushed to the spot without making any delay they failed to start treatment of the ailing jumbo due to the presence of the herd. After repeated efforts of driving away the herd finally they got access of the ailing animal but till then it had succumbed.

“We failed to save the life of the jumbo due to the presence of a herd of four wild elephants. The herd which was surrounding the jumbo tried to prevent the veterinary team from examining it, which took the toll,” a forest officials informed.

Carcass of the dead elephant has been rushed for autopsy and the forest officials are waiting for the report to ascertain the exact cause of death.
