Berhampur: A youth was killed after an auto rickshaw he was driving was hit by a Hyva truck in D Patapur village under Purusottampur police limits in Ganjam district on Saturday.
The deceased has been identified as Swaraj Behera of D Patapur village.
Swaraj, who earns his living by driving an auto rickshaw visited a village pond early in the morning to take bath and was on his way back to home when the mishap took place. Minutes after living the pond, the auto-rickshaw (Registration No. OD 07 D 6889) of the deceased was hit by a speeding Hyva (Registration No. OD 32 C 2044) coming from the opposite direction after the driver lost control over the wheels. Swaraj died on the spot.
Angry locals intercepted the Hyva and detained the driver, identified as Sasikanta Panigrahi, while trying to escape following the accident. They later staged a road blockade in the village demanding compensation to the deceased’s family.
The blockade was removed after Purusottampur Police reached the spot and arrested the Hyva driver. The body of deceased has been sent for postmortem.
