Hockey World Cup: England, Australia enter Semifinals
Bhubaneswar: England and Australia became the first two teams to enter the Semifinals of ongoing Hockey World Cup at the Kalinga Stadium here on Wednesday.
While England edged past Argentina 3-2 in the first quarterfinal match of the day, Australia outplayed France 3-0 in the second match.
Barry Middleton (27), Will Calnan (45) and Harry Martin (49) were the goal scorers for England. Argentina’s veteran dragflick expert Gonzalo Peilat (17, 48) converted a couple of penalty corners for his country.
Liam Ansell of England was adjudged the Player of the Match.
Likewise, Australia stormed into the semifinals of the World Cup tournament after beating France 3-0.
Jeremy Hayward (4), Blake Govers (19) and Aran Zalewski (37) netted the ball for Australia.
Aran Zalewski was given the Player of the Match award.
With today’s win, Australia entered 11th straight Semifinals. On the other hand, it is the third consecutive semifinals for England.
In the Semifinal, England will play against the winner of tomorrow’s first match, either Germany or Belgium while Australia will face the winner of tomorrow’s second match, either the host nation India or Netherlands.
