‘Anti-Chhapri Act 2024’: Netizens urge government to take action against obscene dance reels in public places

Netizens have demanded the government pass Anti-Chhapri Act against the rising explicit dance reels in public places.

Netizens have urged the government to intervene against the rising trend of individuals performing explicit dance routines in public places, particularly at railway premises. Viral videos shared on social media depict people engaging in provocative dances on train compartments, railway platforms, marketplaces, and even in front of iconic landmarks like India Gate.

Expressing their dismay at the inconvenience caused to bystanders in crowded locations, internet users are demanding immediate action from authorities. A Delhi-based advocate proposed the concept of an ‘Anti-Chhapri Act’ to address the issue, focusing on sexually suggestive reels that create public nuisance and discomfort.

The term ‘Anti-Chhapri Act’ gained traction on social media, despite its association with a derogatory term, drawing attention to the need for legal measures against such activities. While the term ‘Chhapri’ is a casteist slur, users rallied behind the concept, emphasizing the necessity for laws to curb sexually explicit public displays.

One viral video showcased individuals, purportedly social media influencers, performing sensual dance moves to peppy songs. Another featured a man dancing to the Bollywood song ‘Jhanjhariya’ in a crowded marketplace. The videos prompted discussions on the appropriateness of such behaviour in public spaces.

Authorities have previously responded to such incidents, with the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) of Central Railways Mumbai division addressing a video of a woman belly dancing on a local train. The DRM emphasized that trains are meant for public transport and not for such activities, urging passengers to adhere to travel norms.

In a similar vein, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) issued appeals to passengers to refrain from engaging in obscene activities during public transport travel. Concerning videos depicting pole dancing, explicit behavior, and fights onboard had caught the attention of authorities, prompting reminders about commuter etiquette.

As discussions around the ‘Anti-Chhapri Act’ gain momentum on social media, the call for government action against explicit dance reels in public places continues to echo among netizens.
