Rivers inter-link will give rise to dangerous human crisis: Rajendra Singh

Bhubaneswar: Waterman of India Dr. Rajendra Singh on Wednesday opined that the rivers inter-link project of the Narendra Modi-led government will give rise to a dangerous human crisis. Singh said this while attending the Odisha Environment Congress-2017 at Regional Museum of Natural History here on Wednesday.

“At this Odisha Environment Congress 2017, activists from across the country working on river issues have congregated. The way the 3-day-long deliberation has been planned in this Congress, I hope a solution and decision ensuring sustainable development, river basin management, river ecology, environmental flow and river’s land for river comes out of the,” said the Waterman of India while speaking to the reporters.

“The linking of the river is the most dangerous project. It will ignite enmity among us. There will be strife relating to river water sharing. Inter-linking of the rivers will give rise to a new crisis. It is dangerous landscape crisis,” he warned.

Singh also appreciated the Water Policy and water management efforts of the Odisha government.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik inaugurated the three-day Odisha Environment Congress with a theme ‘Sustainable River Basin Management.’

In his key note address, Patnaik said, “My Government strongly believes that healthy rivers are required for healthy society. We are committed to equitable distribution as well as sustainable utilisation of the water available on the earth. Our State Water Policy recognises drinking water supply and environmental needs as the priority areas of water use followed by agriculture and hydro-power generation.”

“I expect that Odisha Environment Congress 2017 will provide implementable solutions for the best management of our water resources to meet the future needs of the people of Odisha,” said the CM.
