Odisha’s Kanteimundi brinjal gets GI tag

Reportedly, this variety of brinjal is cultivated in the Mahanadi River basin in Nayagarh district

Bhubaneswar: The Kanteimundi brinjal which is widely cultivated in Nayagarh district of Odisha, has received GI (Geographical Indication) tag. Nayagarh Collector Rabindranath Sahu informed about this today. A wave of happiness has been witnessed in Nayagarh district following the announcement.

As per information, this brinjal variety (the throned-calyx brinjal, scientific name – Solanum Melongena) is largely seen in Kantilo area of the district.

Few months back the Nilamadhav Farmers’ Association had applied for GI tag for Kanteimundi brinjal with the help of the District Administration. On December 6, 2022 a GI team had come down to Bhubaneswar for analysis. Bhubaneswar OUAT had helped in this connection.

After getting GI tag, the demand for Kanteimundi brinjal has increased. This brinjal is said to be very tasty.

As per reports, the ‘Kanteimundi’ brinjal of Nayagarh has got GI tag. The Central Government has given its nod for GI tag for this vegetable of Odisha.

Reportedly, this variety of brinjal is cultivated in the Mahanadi River basin in Nayagarh district.

After GI tag for Kanteimundi brinjal, Nayagarh Collector has assured that arrangement will be made to provide assistance to farmers.
