Odisha extends ban on Paraquat herbicide for additional 30 days

The Odisha government has decided to extend the ban of use of the controversial Paraquat herbicide for an additional 30 days

Bhubaneswar: The Department of Agriculture and Farmers’ Empowerment in Odisha has decided to extend the prohibition on the sale, stock, distribution, manufacturing, and use of the controversial Paraquat herbicide for an additional 30 days, effective immediately from today.

In an official notification released by the department, it states, “The sale/stock/distribution/manufacturing/use of Paraquat and its derivatives/formulation is hereby banned in the state of Odisha for a period of another 30 days after completion of 60 days with the continuation of the previous Govt order vide notification no. 22231/A&FE, dated 5th October 2023, with immediate effect from the issue of this Order.”

This move follows the initial ban imposed on Paraquat by the Odisha government on October 5, citing concerns related to public safety. The decision to extend the ban was prompted by feedback and reports received from various sources, highlighting the adverse effects of the chemical pesticide on human health and animals.

Paraquat, known for its lack of antidote, has raised significant apprehension due to its potential risks.
